Nishioka Sake Brewery in Nakatosa, Japan's oldest sake brewery. Mute Muka Sake Brewery in Shimanto and Fujimoto Brewery known for the famous sake brand Momotaro, also in Shimanto. Behind the creation and enjoyment of fine sake lies a local culture passed down over the ages. Come take a stroll to explore the culture of the midstream area of the Shimanto River.

Founded in the Edo period in 1781, this sake brewery boasts a history of over 230 years. Tours of this, the oldest existing sake brewery in the prefecture, are also available. Inside, you’ll find a gallery featuring the original illustrations from Tosa no Ipponzuri.

Kure Taishomachi Market has a history of more than 100 years. An arcade and open-air market selling fresh fish and produce, serving as the people’s kitchen since antiquity. 12:40 PM to 1:40 PM: Kure Hachiman Shrine and Furusato Coast Stroll
While the origins of this shrine are unclear due to the loss of records in a disaster in 1707 during the Edo period, it has been worshiped by fishermen since its establishment, and the sight of women praying for safe fishing has never ceased. The Kure Hachiman Shrine Grand Festival, one of Tosa’s three major festivals, is held annually on the 14th and 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar, attracting tens of thousands of visitors. In front of the shrine entrance, the coast has been turned into a promenade known as Furusato Coast where visitors can take in views of Futana Island off the coast as they stroll along or climb the tsunami evacuation tower.

2:10 PM to 2:50 PM: Ittohyo Submersible Bridge
Constructed in 1935, Ittohyo Submersible Bridge is the oldest existing submersible bridge on the Shimanto River and has been designated a national cultural property. This submersible bridge has features from the eras in which it was built. Once used as a vital route for daily life, the bridge is now cherished by the river community as a place for children to play.

3:10 PM: Hotel Matsubakawa Onsen
A hot spring resort located along the Hinoji River, a tributary of the Shimanto River. Known since the Edo period, these hot springs, said to be among the best in Shikoku, are lukewarm, help retain heat, and are renowned for their beautifying effects.

9:50 AM to 10:40 AM: Shimantogawa Shochu Bank
A facility for storing chestnut shochu, operated by the local sake manufacturer Mute Muka in the building of a former local bank. In the vault room with its sturdy doors, 500 barrels of premium chestnut shochu, made with 75% chestnuts, are made annually.

The cafeteria Deai no Sato has a warm atmosphere with wooden tables and chairs and is famous for its Stone-Grilled Eel Mixed Rice. The merchandise area sells popular items such as thick and delicious Shiitake mushrooms from the town of Shimanto, Taisho Barley Miso made from local barley, and the Shimanto Taisho original Moist Cake.
